TLDR
Unstable Cotton now has a proper Lyrics subcollection. Each shirt starts with a single bold word — Rock:, Sweet:, Don't:, Everybody: — followed by short fragments from famous songs that all begin with that word. It's a minimalist typography challenge disguised as a t-shirt. Four designs are live now, two more are in the works.
It Started With One Word
Every design in the Unstable Cotton catalog has a story, but the Lyrics shirts have a slightly different origin. They weren't built around a joke or a piece of art or a movie reference. They started with a single word — everybody — and the question: how many songs start with that word?
The answer turned out to be enough to fill a shirt.
The original shirt, "Everybody:", lists song fragments — each one a different classic that opens with that word. No band names. No attribution. Just the fragments, stacked clean in minimal type, on a plain tee. It reads like a list, and for music fans, it reads like a quiz.
That concept became its own subcollection.
The Moment That Confirmed the Concept
Not long after the Everybody shirt launched, the owner wore it on a completely ordinary grocery run. A few aisles over, unprompted, a stranger started singing "Everybody was kung fu fighting."
That fragment is right there on the shirt. The stranger read it, their brain did its thing, and suddenly someone was singing Carl Douglas in the produce section. That's exactly what these shirts are supposed to do — hand someone a word, and watch them fill in the song themselves. The design doesn't explain anything. It just unlocks something that was already there.
The Lyrics Subcollection: How It Works
The format is the same across every shirt in the collection:
- One common English word appears at the top, styled as a bold header with a colon.
- Below it, a list of short lyric fragments — each one a different famous song that opens with that exact word.
- No artist credits. No album art. No colorful graphics.
- Just type. And your own music library rattling around in your head trying to place them all.
That's the whole thing. It's a puzzle you wear. The best part: some people clock every song instantly. Others spend two weeks staring at the shirt on someone across a coffee shop, convinced they almost have it.
The Four Shirts in the Collection (So Far)
Everybody:
The original. The one that started the subcollection without meaning to. "Everybody:" stacks fragments from some of the most recognizable openings in pop music — songs that have been played at stadiums, weddings, and dentist offices alike. It's also, apparently, a shirt that inspires impromptu grocery store performances, which was not a planned feature but is very much appreciated.
Rock:
This one lands differently depending on your era. "Rock:" pulls from songs that defined very different decades and very different rooms — one fragment for the sock-hop crowd, one for the post-punk crowd. Both correct. The interesting part is watching people read it and immediately reveal which generation they belong to based on which song they say out loud first.
Sweet:
This is the shirt where people start arguing. "Sweet:" has five fragments, and at least two of them will send you directly into a group chat debate about which version of the song is the definitive one. (You know the one.) It's also just a testament to how much classic rock loved the word sweet — apparently every era decided it was the right way to open a song.
Don't:
"Don't:" is the one that sneaks up on you. Three fragments, but each one triggers a very different emotional memory — one is pure optimism, one is genuinely eerie, and one is the song that still sounds exactly like 1996. Together, they make for a shirt that basically guarantees a conversation wherever you wear it.
What's Next
Two more shirts in the Lyrics series are in development. The word choices are already locked. Without giving too much away: one leans into the kinds of songs everyone knows but most people couldn't correctly name the artist without Google. The other is built around a word so versatile in pop music that the fragment list practically wrote itself.

Why These Shirts Work (Even If You're Not a Music Nerd)
Most lyric t-shirts lean hard into a single artist or song. They're merch. They signal allegiance. That's fine, but it's a specific purchase — you either know the band or you don't.
The Unstable Cotton Lyrics shirts work differently because they're not about one artist. They're about a shared musical vocabulary. When the fragment is short enough and the song is famous enough, the recognition isn't "I know this band" — it's "I know this feeling." That's a wider net. And it means the shirt works even if two people wearing it are thinking of completely different songs when they read it.
Minimal design also means these shirts age well. No faded graphic, no dated color palette. Just text, and whatever the reader brings to it.
